The black 1992 Honda NSX was purchased for Ayrton Senna to use in Portugal
A 1992 Honda NSX driven by Aryton Senna, the famed three times Formula One World Champion, is being offered at auction on February 22.
The car was purchased by Antonio Carlos de Almeida Braga, close personal friend, manager and mentor of Senna, for the driver to use when he visited his home in Portugal.
Following Senna's death at Imola in 1994 during the San Marino Grand Prix, the car remained in the garage at Braga's home where it was not allowed to be touched or driven by anyone. After two years it was sold to a buyer who kept it only a short time before being purchased by the current owner 17 years ago.
All three of Senna's Formula One World Championships with McLaren were powered by Honda engines. He had been involved with the development of the NSX and his recommendations had been implemented in the production process, most notably the stiffening of the aluminium monocoque.
The V6-engined NSX was an engineering masterpiece with the famous Honda VTEC variable valvegear technology and handling that surpassed its supercar rivals, while being easier to drive than all of them. Senna's own black NSX remained one of his most cherished possessions and today is still the property of the Senna family in Brazil.
