Imperial tobacco which has been sponsoring team Lc :us with the brand
name JPS announced terminating its 18 year involvement with Fl .
"We feel regrettable for this decision but the cost for entering F1
esp . for the driver is rising incredibly ." said .c^n Brockschidge
the senior director of Imperial tobacco . "J?S is one of the most
important brand for our company and we have been endeavoring in many
ways for its sales expansion . F1 sponsoring is one of them but
sponsoring fee is presently rising amazingly as you know. In '87 it
rises to the extent that we can hardly afford to pay",he explains .
The expenditure F1 team spend for 1 season is said to be ove r
S 1Omins(V1 .6bins) . Another reason for the withdrawa . is that JPS was
disappointed at the fact that Lotus team failed to appoint British
driver as a partner for Ayrton Senna . This happened when Lotus
converted its engine from Renault to Honda on condition that the
driver Nakajima to be used instead of Johnny Dumph:ees . On the other
hand, Noel Stunberry the PR officer of team stated as follows :
"We have nothing to give comment officially . we have had a fruitful
re-ationship with imperial tobacco for many years . As for the team
we announced our 2 year project plan last August is still
continuing . We are vent confident about the futu :e . : Tea- Lotus ."
Lotus team in its 15 year relationship with - per :el coba:cc won in
47rraces,andgained the contractor's title 5 _:mes and world
championship for the drive . . rimes .

"We feel very sorry for losing sponsoring of JPS . We dcs::ed 2 years
contract with them for the stable management of :ne team which includes
the new car development, but imperial insisted on :-Dfr.g one-year
contract with other conditions that did not meat -s which ended u p
the regrettable results . We've finished negotiating with new sponsor
and we are not worring about the results . We canto: announce the name
of the new sponsor but its a multinational corpsration whose bran d
you are already familiar with . "
