Alain Prost has thanked former rival Ayrton Senna for helping him to reach the heights he did in F1.

Alain Prost marked his induction into the Motor Sport Hall of Fame by paying a touching tribute to former team-mate and rival Ayrton Senna.

The pair did not see eye-to-eye during their time together in the McLaren camp, and only began to show deference when Prost announced that he was retiring from F1 at the end of 1993, having beaten the Brazilian to claim his fourth world championship title. Just over six months later, Senna was dead, the final victim of an infamous Imola weekend, but Prost remembered his nemesis while on stage at London's Royal Opera House on Wednesday night.

“I think the competition I faced in that era made me a better driver, although I only really realised the significance of my rivalry with Ayrton after I retired,” the Frenchman confirmed, “Our battles really benefited F1 and drove it to another, more human level.

“We had different characters, a different way of driving and a different approach to the sport but, after I stopped racing, I understood the way Ayrton was a lot more clearly and I need to thank him, because my success is 50 per cent down to him.”

"Acho que a competição eu enfrentei naquela época me fez um piloto melhor , embora eu realmente só percebeu o significado da minha rivalidade com Ayrton , depois que eu me aposentei ", o francês confirmou , "Nossas batalhas realmente beneficiado F1 e dirigi -la para outro , mais nível humano.

"Nós tivemos personagens diferentes , uma forma diferente de condução e uma abordagem diferente para o esporte, mas , depois que eu parei de corrida, eu entendi a maneira Ayrton era muito mais clara e eu preciso agradecer a ele, porque o meu sucesso é de 50 por cento para baixo com ele. "
